Although game companies earn a significant amount from each purchase, it may not be as much as a successful game that is based off of in-game purchases. If people have some disposable money but not enough to buy the game, they may wait for discounts. For obvious reasons, discounts also give designers, developers, companies, etc. less money. For the next point, if a game is priced highly, you'd expect it to be a great game. On occasion, an expensive game doesn't sell much, probably because the players had a high expectation. The players were let down. For the final point, players may used shared accounts. If you're close friends with someone and you split the cost for a game, you can just share your password and play on the same account at different times.
